Nepal General Info

Business Hours of Nepal

The office working hours of Nepal Government are 9am to 5 pm except for Saturdays and other government holiday. The working hours for companies, schools, governments, and shopping centers varies from region to region, mainly due to the local people's interests and customs.

  1. Government Offices: Sunday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.
  2. Government Banks: Sunday to Friday 10 am to 3 pm but most close by 12 pm on Friday But private banks open 9 am to 6 pm.
  3. Business Offices: Monday to Friday, offices are open from 10 am to 5 pm but some private companies are open from 9 am to 6 pm.
  4. Embassies and Foreign Organizations: Monday to Friday, open from 9 am to 5 pm.
  5. Shopping Centers / Shops Major shopping centers: open from 10 am to 8 pm and are closed on Saturdays, but convenient local shops are open from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm every day. There is about 1 shop for every home in Kathmandu, left or right!

Medical Matters and Advice

While you are Nepal trekking, one does not need to overly worry about hazards as far as your health is concerned. However, preventive measures such as a thorough medical checkup and inoculations before begin your trekking can save you from unexpected risks. In the remote places of Nepal are not supplied with the necessities that are essential for modern medical facilities, and as the rescue and evacuation are measured in days. It is imperative to make a comprehensive first-aid box consisting of basic drugs and accessories to take with you while hiking. We at “Nepal Mother House treks” provide every group with a first-aid kit bag. Even though, we advice you bring your medicine mattress also. Sometime, the medicine complex won’t be similar your country and ours. For the medicine advice, you may look at various trekking guidebooks and the pamphlet published by the Himalayan Rescue Association as they both give you detailed information on a complete list of recommended medical supplies. You can get these guidebooks in the bookshops of Kathmandu. In case of more serious illness or injury, prompt evacuation to Kathmandu is the best remedy, which we always with you to your assist. Modern dentistry is unknown in the hills of Nepal, so it is advised to have a checkup before departure from home. Tooth fillings sometimes loosen in cold temperatures and at high altitudes, so it is recommended to have them checked before leave from home.


Foreign Exchange and Banks

The unit of currency in Nepal is the Nepali Rupee (NPR). One Nepali Rupee is made up of 100 paisa. Nepali rupee notes come in 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, and 1,000 denominations while 1 and 2 Rupees are coins. The visitors other than Indian nationals are required to pay their hotel bills and air tickets in foreign currency. Nepalese currency can be bought at the foreign exchange counters at the airport or from ATMs Money Exchange counter. The foreign currency exchange counters of different banks are also opened at various places throughout the city. Foreign currencies must be exchanged only through banks or authorized foreign exchange. When exchanging money at the banks or a hotel counter always ensure that you are given a receipt as this is essential for converting your rupees to hard currency on your departure. A maximum of 15% can be converted to hard currency on your departure. Tourists other than Indian are not allowed to import or export the Indian currency (less than 500 bills). The exchange rates of the foreign currencies are determined by the Nepal Rastra Bank and are announced in the press daily. Nepal currency is not applicable in India.

Indian currency of INR 500 and INR 1000 denominations are not allowed to be brought into Nepal and will not be exchanged and will not be accepted for transaction of any kind.

The Nepal Government Banks are open 9 am to 5 pm, Sunday to Friday. But other private banks head office provides service longer time in a day also. Tourism Development Bank, Himalaya Bank is open 9:00 AM to until 7:00 PM Sunday to Friday. Nowadays there are many ATM services in the Thamel. You can withdraw 35 thousand Rs every transaction up to 100 thousand NPR in one day from Nebil Bank ATMs.


Shopping

Shopping can be a very rewarding and exciting experience in Kathmandu. There are numerous tourist shops on the main streets and the hotel arcades are brimming with tempting jewelry, statues, and other typical Nepalese handicrafts. Thangkas are one of the best buys in Nepal owing to their high quality and low price. Each place has its own specialty product which is unique to the area. For example, Patan is a famous center for Nepali handicraft whereas Bhaktapur is the best place to buy pottery. You may get carved wooden items while at Patan. As for jewelry, buyers can opt for loose gems or custom made items. Besides handicrafts, Nepal is also the best place for genuine luxury goods with a host of departmental stores and shopping plazas offering international brandname products. Kathmandu has become a haven for the serious shopper. Browsers will enjoy the city’s numerous traditional markets that overflow with vegetables, fruits and many other items.


Weather and Climate

Nepal’s weather is generally pleasant whole in the year. The Tropical, Temperate and Tundra natures of climate are likewise encountered in its Terai belts, midland hills and then alpine regions. We divided it in six seasons.
