Kyajo Ri Peak Climbing

Nepal has more than one thousand peaks above 6,000 meters, which have been the stage for outstanding achievements in the world of peak climbing expeditions. The Everest region, boasting with four of the worlds six tallest peaks Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu is also blessed with numerous lesser mountain peaks, including the Kyajo Ri. It is situated in the Mahalangur Himal range in Khumbu region, just north of Namche Bazaar, and is a long strip of peaks continuing all the way to Mt. Cho Oyu on the Nepal-Tibet boarder. Being the highest point on the massif dividing the Gokyo and Thame valleys, the Kyajo Ri summit on the southern part of the ridge (6,186m) offers excellent views of the whole Khumbu Area.

Kyajo Ri Peak was opened to climbing by the Nepalese Ministry of Tourism, in 2002 and the first (official) ascent was made that year by a Franco/British team. This is a terrific climbing peak among the trekking peaks of Nepal Himalaya. As a 6000 meter, or a trekking peak, Kyajo Ri commands no less respect and preparation from the adventurers. It is a beautiful mountain, with a sharp defined summit, and is the highest peak in its immediate vicinity. Climbing Kyajo Ri can be attempted through different routes. The South-East ridge is protected by steep towers, so it might be more challenging from this side. It is also possible to try along the North-East face, but the hanging glacier below the face is exposed. In order to save time, it would be better to attempt the shorter route to Kyajo Ri along its South-Western Ridge. This route is free from fixed rope and anchors, retaining its pristine, wild condition, with lesser levels of objective risks. Dissimilar, Lobuche East or Island Peak, climbing route actually ends on the highest pointed summit. Kyajo Ri Peak is designed for those adventurer lover who are energetic and physically fit enough for a challenging and off-the-beaten path trekking and climbing experience. If you wish to climb one of most famous mountains in the world in just two weeks, we at “Nepal Mother House Treks and Expedition” highly recommend this peak. This is a difficult expedition with significant technical climbing at high altitude. The summit day is very long and exhausting. The approach trek to base camp is not overly difficult and is suitable for experienced off-trail hikers in good physical condition. Regarding difficulty, it is probably comparable to the Cho La route, or to treks that cross the Renjo La, and perhaps a bit harder than the Everest Kalapatar trek near Everest Base Camp. The Base Camp to first Camp (5,350m) is long and makes for a hard day over rough, but not overly technical terrain. Camp two (5,700m) is not so far from the first Camp yet the intervening climbing is over difficult giant boulders. After this soon appears belayed climbing. You will belay, lower, and rappel the same route upon descent. Overall, the difficulty is comparable to the summit day on Ama Dablam. Kyajo Ri is considerably harder physically and technically than other Peaks.

The Kyajo Ri is a pleasure in itself and also ensures that you are adequately acclimated for the climb. The route follows the main "Everest Base Camp Route" as far as Namche Bazar. Then it leaves either the main route to Gokyo, from here we cross the Renjo La, a high pass between the Gokyo Valley to the east and the Thame valley to the west or Thame valley and then to Mende and enter the Kyajo Drangka, the hidden valley to the south of Kyajo Ri. The summit of Kyajo Ri offers breathtaking views of the many peak as well as the roof of the world, Mt. Everest. View of other peaks include: Lhotse, Nupse, and Makalu, Ama Dablam, Khangtenga, Thamserku and Tawache and Cholaste. The descent is the same way, returning to Base Camp on the same day.

After this rich Himalayan experience, our Kyajo Ri Peak Climbing trip will end at Lukla airstrip; descending through the traditional trade center Namche Bazaar. We at “Nepal Mother House Treks and Expedition” are glad to design your Kyajo Ri Peak Climbing with our experienced climbing Guides and expert staff to fit your desired experience.
